Can Learning To Detox Your Body Enhance Your Well Being
Written by Sammy Colon on July 8th, 2009I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy good health for pretty much all my life. I very rarely got ill, and can’t remember the last time I had a cold or virus of any kind - or at least not that lasted longer than about 12 hours. So when I completely lost all my energy and was feeling run down all the time it was quite a shock to my system, and getting out of bed in the morning was becoming quite a chore. I’d been to see the doctor on many occasions, and had undergone several test, but each one showed that there was nothing medically wrong with me.
As luck would have it, not long after I met up with a naturopath who intimated that I should look into doing a detox, and take some time to learn how to detox the body with a view to changing my eating habits. It seemed a lot of people had a lot of good things to say about it, so I decided to learn all about it, and get to grips with what is really involved and why the natural health industry recommend regular detox dieting and recommend starting with the 7 day detox diet so strongly.
She also hinted to me to try a relaxing foot detox. I now treat myself to a foot massage at least once a week, but if you don’t have one of those, the foot detox patches can be just as good - but doing it this way you miss out on the relaxing foot massage at the same time
There are some very simple things you can do to help detox your body.
Herbal teas are just as good as water
One of the most important things you need to is drink lots of water while you are following a detox diet because it will help purge excessive toxins from your body. There’s lots of other health reasons to drink water as it helps prevent constipation, improves concentration, and encourage clear skin. You should aim for about 2 to 3 liters a day, but increase that when the weather is hot.
A general pointer is to increase your water intake by about half a liter for each hour of exercise. The healthiest type of water is filtered tap water. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. Herbal teas are a great alternative in helping your reach your daily quote - loose leaf is better than tea bags as it hasn’t been processed as much. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow are particularly good as their essential oils help the detox process. Green tea and redbush has other health benefits too as it is a rich source of natural antioxidants.
Choose Organic Food Where Possible
When detoxing, there’s no need to go completely organic, as organic produce is normally higher priced than non organic equivalents, but a little organic produce will go a long way to getting you started.
It’s not a major problem if you can’t get hold of any organic produce. All you need to worry about is eating enough fresh foods - even if they are non-organic - instead of eating too few of them. Having said that, there are some very beneficial health reasons of having as much as possible of organic produce on a healthy detox diet.
Organic foods are free from artificial pesticides and sprays, so they contain the lowest possible amounts of artificial, potentially toxic chemicals (such as nitrates). Organic farming is a hotly debated and controversial topic because there is evidence that the build up of pesticide residues may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.
Organic foods undergo minimal processing. The big benefits of this are that they have no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and free from artificial preservatives. On top of that, organic foods usually taste better too.
